Archive for March, 2011

Hi Lindy,

My husband Ken told me to send this picture into you. I caught it in February while on Christmas Island. It was on the second last day of fishing and my 7th fish of the day. I wasn’t sure if I was going to get it in since I looked down at my reel and I had only a few loops of backing on!!! But I did land it and although it wasn’t officially weighed, Moana thought it to be about 30 inches and 11 lbs. I caught it with TJ on a 7 wt. rod. I think it is the bonefish of my lifetime.

Many thanks for a wonderful trip.

Lorraine W.

Congratulations Lorraine!

Although March has been a tumultuous month for river levels in Oregon, Scott has been having a great season chasing dime-bright steelhead in the Tillamook Bay area.

Cost of this trip= $525/day for 1 or 2 anglers

We’ve just received our first report back from the guides on Farquhar Atoll in the Seychelles, where they have just completed their 3rd week, giving them the chance to explore the atoll with the use of 4 new skiffs. According to the guides the fishing was simply outstanding. All the species were around in good numbers, with the Triggerfish and Bumphead fishing in particular far exceeding anyone’s wildest imagination….in their opinion, the numbers of Triggerfish are the finest they’ve ever encountered!

This is an extract from the guides’ weekly blog entry: “With the use of our versatile skiffs we entered a maze of bommie fields and soon we’d found parts of the atoll that few had explored, and judging by the quality of the fishing….. few had ever fished. Large Triggerfish seemingly littered the flats, schools of ‘Bumpies’ where feeding over the marl and sand flats, GT’s cruised the edges and some truly enormous ‘Milkies’ fed hungrily off the surface. Christmas had certainly come early for Team FlyCastaway. Not only was the flats fishing superb but the afternoon bluewater sessions where equally impressive. Tails of fly caught Wahoo, Bonito being upgraded into massive Dogtooth Tuna and Sailfish leaping into the air, have made the start to our season a truly memorable one.”

Simply put, Farquhar Atoll is an ideal venue for anglers’ intent on targeting a multitude of flats and offshore species alike. Whether it’s tackling Giant Trevally, Triggerfish, Bumphead Parrotfish, Bonefish, Bluefin Trevally, Barracuda or Milkfish on the flats or taming the monsters of the deep such as Dogtooth & Yellowfin Tuna, Sailfish or Wahoo, Farquhar has them all!

I was one of your lucky guests that went to Christmas Island in Feb, 2011.

We had a great trip, and I thought you might enjoy the enclosed picture of a large Giant Trevally I caught. The guide estimated it at between 45 and 50 pounds and I caught it on my 10 wt as it was chasing mullet close to the flat I was fishing. I did not chum for the fish. It was a real thrill and I look forward to booking other trips with Fly Water Travel. Thanks

SMITHERS – The Province has opted to maintain the current regulations in the Skeena River Steelhead Fishery for 2011-13 pending the outcome of a tourism and economic impacts study. Since 2007, the Province has consulted with stakeholders under the Skeena Quality Waters Strategy. By consulting with resident anglers, guides, First Nations, local community and business leaders and non-resident anglers, the Province has developed a thorough understanding of stakeholder concerns around the steelhead fishery. What remains to be investigated is the economic and tourism impacts of any possible regulation change. That is why the Province is conducting a study of those impacts to inform the next set of regulation changes for the 2013-15 angling seasons. For more information on recommendations for angling management plans, visit: http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/skeena/qws/
