We have just had an opening on the lower Deschutes River for August 2-4.

This is a 3 day / 2 night trip with the only fly fishing outfitter on the lower Deschutes that uses a jet boat. Using the jet boat ensures that you will fish more water during the productive hours of the day than any of the drift boat-based operations.

These dates (August 2-4) are prime time on the lower Deschutes for the early chrome torpedoes. Returns of fish in the Columbia system are huge this year and now is the time to get down there and be the first to hook one!

This report just came in from our friend Damon Scott, Ranch Manager at El Rancho Pinoso:

“The group had a great first day and we have officially converted the wives into fly fishing fools. They all fished all day and Mrs. Fay ended her day with a 19 inch bow that she worked 2 hours to get.”

Early reports are coming in from anglers returning from the Dean River. We are pleased to say that Dean River steelhead are entering the river in good numbers and anglers are hooking them. We just received this report from our friend Bruce Nakao:

“Here are some of the fish I landed on the Dean. Finally I did get to be on that trip where guides would say of it, “you should have been here last week” This was last week. Our group of 7 hooked 113 fish and landed 60, of which 41 were steelhead and 19 were chinook. I landed 12 of 20 vs. the last time I was at the Dean when I landed 3 out of 5. My 36+ inch steelhead was the biggest landed this week and 36 gets you into the book they keep like in TDF for 15 lb. fish. Kenny, you will be happy to hear that I hooked 4 fish in one run with your prototype fly; two salmon and two steelhead. The salmon and 32 inch hen in the photos were on your fly.”

Way to go Bruce!!

Cary Pugh just returned from fishing on Marco Island in Florida:

“A quick report. Fishing was affected by weather. Had to work for fish and didn’t have many good shots especially at tarpon. This redfish was probably the best quality. Will send a snook and tarpon photo next. Am ready for bolivia now though. This was an excellent warm up!”

Thanks Cary!

From Rodrigo Salles at Untamed Angling:

“Tsimane Lodge has reached almost mid season facing new challenges but wonderful rewards. Low water, no rain, and one of the biggest droughts of last years in the National Park. Our guides have worked really hard to find the secret of these waters during these very technical weeks. Now some good drops of rain fall on the top of our roof, but we really need the real thing here.”

“These days it is hard to get results, but impressive and hard to forget when reached. Tsimane waters can bring the most rewarding days of the entire season. When you don’t have the fish in your backyard you need to navigate more, walk, hike and sweat. As a unique gift, this hard work deserves the most beautiful frames and backgrounds of Tsimane.”

Thanks to Rodrigo Salles of Untamed Angling for this great report and photos!

This came in from Mark Sprague, who went to Bahia de los Suenos at the end of May:

“So last year was great but this year topped it. I had a tight timeframe to get a trip in this year and James made it work. That is what is so great about James and the operation he runs, he makes it all work easily for you. I was gone from Los Angeles for a total of 55 hours (left Monday at 10 AM and returned Wednesday at 4 PM), We fished the late afternoon bite on Monday and then full days on Tuesday and Wednesday.

You’re picked up by your panga on the beach in front of the hotel with bait already in the boat (maximizes fishing time). James sends his captains out to get bait very early so you’re always the first boats with lines in the water. He also has some other tricks that I won’t disclose but in summary you spend 99% of your time fishing and only 1% running for bait. The other great thing is that the prime fishing area is less than 5 minutes from the hotel.

Now the fishing – we were pretty much wide-open for big, quality Roosterfish the whole time. If you check other reports for Baja at that same time (late May 2010), you’ll see that the conditions were not good. The amount of fish you catch is strictly based on how well you fish because James gets you on the fish. I consider myself a novice but James gets you casting and stripping like a pro in no time. We had multiple double hook-ups each day. We out-fished the bait boats who would try their luck in our area. The highlight for me on the trip was getting the first dorado of the season. We’re fishing for Roosterfish and two streaks come under our boat (remember we’re 50 yards from shore). James yells dorado, I get my fly in the water and after two strips, I got the dorado on. James grabs his rod, casts and hooks his own dorado. Double hook-up of dorado on my last hour on the water.

As I said last year James runs a first class operation, is fun to fish with and has an amazing attention to detail. He knows the waters well and has the best panga captains. He also has incredible equipment (I tried 5 different fly rods he had before settling on a custom surf rod he built) and is not afraid to go through as many flys as necessary for you to catch fish. I know it is his business but I never get the sense that he is worried about the money aspect of anything which is very refreshing and makes the experience even better. This is a great trip for fisherman but also for their wives, husbands, etc. as they can relax on the beach or get in some fun fishing without a lot of hassle.” – Mark
